Eligibility
The Power of Family Scholarship Program™ is open to pairs of
applicants, consisting of one student and that student’s “supporter.”
Prizes will be awarded to the student applicant. Each student and his or her
supporter submits a separate 500-word essay, answering the same essay question from his or her own prespective. (You will find the essay question near the bottom of this page.)
Students of any age may apply, and it is not necessary for the student to be
currently enrolled in school or college at the time that the application is
submitted.
The student’s supporter can be any person over the age of 18, but must
be someone important in the student’s life—such as a parent, guardian,
relative, mentor, or coach.
Awards
Ten $1,000 scholarships (non-renewable) plus additional bonus prizes.
The Essay Question
The student and his or her supporter are required to submit two separate
500-word essays, one written by the student and the second written by the supporter.
Each essay should discuss and describe a moment when the student first discovered
a new activity, skill, intellectual discipline, or hobby that sparked a burst
of enthusiasm, passion, or unusual commitment in the student’s life. The
student’s essay should be written from his or her perspective, and the
supporter’s essay should be written from the supporter’s perspective.
Some of the topics that applicants should address in their essays include:
a) How was the student first introduced to the activity?
b) How was the student’s interest encouraged and nurtured?
c) How was mastery of the activity developed?
d) Has this impacted the student’s life in unexpected ways?
e) Has this process of discovery and mastery enabled the student to tap into
other reservoirs of creative and productive power?
f) How has all of this affected the personal relationship between the student
and supporter?
